The population surge of millennials in Washington D.C. has caused local developers and architects to start changing how they make living spaces, according to an article in the Washington Post. Millennials are, as a rule, more concerned with amenities than square footage, leading developers to design buildings with smaller living spaces and more amenities. Those amenities include: electric car charging stations, yoga studios, vegetable gardens, and music studios. Existing apartment buildings have also started making changes, with some buildings as young as 10 years making renovations in order to accommodate the different lifestyles of the younger generation.
So far, this trend has mostly affected rental buildings, due to millennials being hesitant to buy, as they don’t want to have to deal with selling their homes if they get a job offer in another city. But even with that hesitancy, it is likely condos will soon start catering more to millennials as well.
