Climate-resilient infrastructure is a must in the face of issues such as increased flooding, and thawing permafrost in places like Northern Canada. Foundations made of interlocking steel or aluminum frames are providing solutions to these issues. The unique designs allow water to run underneath the buildings with minimal degradation, and to adjust to movement in the ground beneath them. This is ideal for structures built on permafrost. The metal foundations can be less than half the cost of concrete foundations.

Changes to building codes and standards are also needed so that new construction is designed to withstand extreme weather events caused by climate change.  These events have been on the rise both in Canada and throughout the world.
