Coastal cities in Asian are overflowing. Land reclamation has been the response to the demand for coastal land – dumping sand to create new land for malls and even new cities. This approach has proven to be lucrative, but it turns out that reclamation has negative environmental impacts. Not only does it deplete the supply of sand, but it also destroys entire ecosystems. On top of this, even when using the best engineers, projects start to deteriorate after ten years.
A new solution is the floating city. Like oil rig platforms, cities are anchored to the sea bed in coastal areas.
As yet there are no living floating cities, but the concept allows for a more environmentally friendly, and cost effective approach. (See full article)
